With shattered hearts and unimaginable grief, we announce the passing of Mason Straeter, age 12, of Rochester, New York. A cherished son, brother, student, athlete, and motocross rider, Mason died in a tragic motorcycle accident while doing what he loved most—riding full throttle on the dirt track, wide open and fearless.
Mason was a bright and spirited 7th grader at Rochester Middle School, where he was known for his energy, kindness, and courage. His teachers and peers remember him as a beacon of light—always a friend, always smiling, always ready to lift others up.
“Mason’s presence brought energy, courage, and kindness that touched the lives of many,” the school shared. “He was a friend to others, a bright light in our community, and someone who made a lasting impact through the way he cared for those around him.”
Mason was also a proud member of Rochester Youth Baseball and a beloved rider in the motocross community, where he wore the number #502. To his teammates and fellow riders, Mason was more than just a competitor—he was family.
His father, Matt Straeter, recounted the moments before the accident in a heartfelt tribute.
“Mason spent the afternoon doing what he loved—working on our sand track, reshaping jumps, and practicing with excitement in his heart. He committed fully to life, always giving 100%, always chasing the thrill with joy.”
Mason’s final ride ended near the top of a jump—the very one he had proudly cleared minutes before. He passed away instantly, doing what brought him pure happiness.
He leaves behind his devoted parents, Matt and Lindsay Straeter, his loving sister Ellie, and a wide circle of family, friends, classmates, coaches, and fellow riders who will never forget the way he made them feel—seen, valued, and loved.
Mason was a boy of deep faith who bowed his head and prayed with his family just hours before his passing. His parents take comfort knowing that Mason now rides the most beautiful track of all, hand in hand with Jesus, wide open and full of joy.
“Life is fragile, but eternity is forever,” Matt wrote. “If you ride, ride with heart. Ride 100%. That was Mason. And now, he’s racing in heaven.”
The Rochester Community is invited to gather in remembrance, with grief counseling offered at Rochester Middle School, and tributes continuing across local schools, churches, and the motocross world.
Mason’s legacy will live on through his smile, his spirit, and the fearless way he lived life. He reminded us to embrace every moment, to take risks, to love big, and to pray with an open heart.
